Do you know any actual overnight successes? If so I’d love to hear about it via a quick note HERE.This is the closest thing to an overnight success I’ve come across recently:That’s a photograph of the band Living Colour performing live. Here’s an excerpt from the Wikipedia article on lead singer Corey Glover:——Glover was born in Brooklyn, New York City. He was an aspiring actor when guitarist Vernon Reid drafted him into Living Colour in 1985, reportedly after seeing Glover singing “Happy Birthday” at a friend’s party.Living Colour found immediate success with the release of their debut album, Vivid in 1988. It eventually went platinum in April 1989 and again five years later. The album’s single “Cult of Personality” won the 1989 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance and the band was named Best New Artist at the MTV Video Music Awards.——Now, I know that there were things in place before the band formed in 1985. There was latent talent, lots of practice, lots of–as Henry Ford is credited with saying–opportunity dressed in overalls and looking like work. But even so, going from brand new band to platinum album (co-produced by Mick Jagger, no less) in 4 years is about as close as I’ve ever heard of to an overnight success. This is me subtly trying to tell you, “hang in there”.Don’t delay your success by waiting to focus your efforts. The focus is a force multiplier. It gives you leverage you’d otherwise lack as a generalist. But also, don’t feel bad if it takes a few years to get the results of that focus. That’s not unusual.Quick note: my friend and colleague Liston Witherill gave a great presentation last week on the subject of marketing partnerships. If that’s interesting to you, check it out:Video: https://philipmorganconsulting.com/dev-shop-marketing-briefings/dsmb-liston-witherill-on-marketing-partnerships/Audio: http://consultingpipelinepodcast.com/078-PWant help improving your positioning or marketing?
