I had some blood drawn last week for a routine health checkup and while in the chair I saw a sign that said “Please tip your phlebotomist.”Just kidding.There was a sign with the word phlebotomist on it, but I can’t remember what else it said. I was just so struck by that word because it’s literally the first time I’ve ever noticed it.Phlebotomist.I asked the woman who was drawing blood from me if, when people ask what she does for a living, she says, “I’m a phlebotomist.”She said, “Yep, I do!” and then we both laughed in agreement that the next question she usually gets is “what the heck is that?!?!?”.That’s the problem with job titles in a technical profession. They often are unrecognizable to outsiders.It’s good that, in most cases, these technical job titles spur a little bit of followup conversation via the “what the heck is that?!?!?” response they usually draw out of people.But what would be a better result is an introduction or a referral. Someone saying, “Hey, you know I know a manager at [specific kind of company you work with]. I wonder if they would need your help?”.How could you describe the focus of your services in a way that leads naturally to an introduction or referral?Yeah, sometimes you’re going to not feel like talking with someone and you’ll brush off the “what do you do?” question with an answer that’s designed to shut down any followup conversation. In those cases you’ll say “I’m a programmer” or “I write software” and try to exit the conversation as quickly as possible.But other times you’ll want to use the opportunity of meeting a stranger to spread the word about what you do.
